At CERCARMU, community service is not just a duty—it’s a commitment. In September 2024, members of the Cameroonian Students Association at the Regional Maritime University (CERCARMU) rolled up their sleeves to participate in “Operation Clean Your Frontage”, an impactful beach cleanup event aimed at promoting environmental awareness and keeping our coastal areas clean.
The event, organized in collaboration with local environmental groups, brought together volunteers from different communities, institutions, and industries to clear waste, raise awareness about ocean pollution, and emphasize sustainable practices.
Our Role in the Cleanup
CERCARMU students were proud to join hands with volunteers from across Accra, showing our association’s commitment to both community development and environmental conservation. Throughout the event, our members worked tirelessly to:
- Remove plastic waste, bottles, and debris scattered along the beach.
- Sort recyclable materials, contributing to sustainable waste management.
- Educate locals and other volunteers about how proper waste disposal can prevent marine pollution.
It was not just about cleaning; it was about setting an example and showing that small actions can create big changes when done collectively.
What Our Members Had to Say
“It was an eye-opener to see the amount of waste that ends up on our shores. As future maritime professionals, we must be champions of clean oceans,” said one of our members, adding that the event highlighted the need for maritime students to take the lead in environmental advocacy.
“This experience gave me a chance to meet people who share my passion for protecting the environment. It reminded me that every plastic bottle I pick up counts!” another student shared enthusiastically.
Building a Sustainable Future
The beach cleanup reflects our association’s commitment to promoting environmental sustainability and good community relations. As future engineers, sailors, and maritime professionals, we understand that protecting our coastlines is crucial to the health of our marine ecosystems and the well-being of future generations.
Our involvement in “Operation Clean Your Frontage” not only showcased the power of teamwork but also reaffirmed our belief that the responsibility to protect our environment starts with each one of us.
Looking Forward
The event may be over, but our commitment to environmental sustainability continues. CERCARMU plans to initiate similar activities in the future and collaborate with like-minded organizations to drive positive change in our coastal communities.
Stay tuned for more updates on upcoming projects and events.
Let’s keep making a difference—one beach at a time!
